Grahamstown Update (Mar 2010)
During the past year Engage have been able to send £2500 to the Baptist Church in Grahamstown, South Africa, to help them with their work among the children of the surrounding townships. This amount is made up of the annual gift of around £1300 by Watnall Road Baptist Church, the balance being a donation by Diane Sadler’s family following her funeral, and funds raised by Kathryn and John Johnson’s Home Group.
The money forwarded by WRBC has led to the following projects:
- The crèche, which was set up about five years ago is now able to supply around 40 children aged between one and six with lunch and breakfast every day.
- Two young people are being helped with transport to and from school and with school fees.
- The annual party for children from the local Hospice was held in November and sweets were distributed to other children.
- A Teaching Programme has been organised involving about 40 more children, which hopefully will provide opportunities for evangelism.
- A programme of outreach is being organised among the children in Grahamstown during the World Cup and some money will be spent on recruiting and training volunteers.
- Plans are going ahead to set up a children’s library, which will be named in memory of Diane Sadler.
Engage keep in contact with Dirk Coetzee of Grahamstown Baptist Church and quote from his last email, “We will be able to cover the costs of all these ministries with the money we have received from you and still have change to venture into something new. Thank you for making a difference in our community. We continue to pray for you as a church, may our Lord richly bless and use you as you continue to seek to serve Him so faithfully.” Dirk also asks for our prayers for his family and church.
